M&S is the latest high street retailer that\u2019s struggling with the limping economy, with rumours circulating that retailer may be sold, due to the clothing arm of the business again seeing a drop last quarter.<\/p>\n

According to a report from analysts at Nomura, who it\u2019s said has a \u201cstrong record of forecasting developments at M&S\u201d, the high street store experienced falling sales again in the Christmas and New Year period.<\/p>\n

This has continued into 2013, with reports suggesting that \u201cclothing sales were down year-on-year by a double-digit figure\u201d.<\/p>\n

The report from the FT<\/a> highlights how the economy is affecting even the biggest names in clothing retail. Bearing this in mind, it\u2019s a good time to be a web trader at a time when keeping overheads to a minimum may be the difference between survival and failure.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s wear<\/strong><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s clothing has been \u201cparticularly difficult\u201d for M&S and they are hoping that the upcoming spring range will be their saviour. However, M&S, whilst good quality, has never been inexpensive, so it\u2019s no real surprise that the clothing arm of the business is one of the first to suffer as consumers look to cheaper options.<\/p>\n

For M&S, this means that if its clothing sales don\u2019t pick up by the autumn, we will see potential buyers making more noise, especially since profits have been falling since last summer. The last six months has been the weakest for M&S since the 2008\/2009 financial year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are almost getting to a point now, where the worse trading gets, the louder the bid speculation will become,\u201dBethany Hocking, analyst at Investec Securities, told the FT.<\/p>\n
